Causes of Dry Hair

Chances are that you will experience dry hair sometime in your life, or have dry hair on a daily basis. The type of hair you have, your life style, how you style your hair, and your overall health can play a part of dry hair. When your hair is damaged, the scales on the cuticle separate and are no longer able to protect the inner layers. Oil and moisture escapes and cause dry hair that looks dull and can easily break.

Winter Tips for Dry Skin and Hair – Part 2

We have tips on how to keep your skin and hair healthy during the cold months!

Tips 1-3 are in the earlier blog “Winter Tips for Dry Skin and Hair – Part 1.

4. Change skin care routine.

  • Your skin becomes drier in cold weather, especially if it is windy. When it’s windy the moisture on the skin evaporates more quickly and skin doesn’t produce much oil.
  • Try adding a heavy moisturizer and use it every morning and night. Again be careful of lotions that contain mineral oil as this acts as a barrier on the skin but not a moisturizer.
  • Try an exfoliate to help remove all those dry skin cells and make your skin nice and smooth.
  • Don’t forget about the rest your body. Although your body doesn’t need as much attention as your face does it’s always good to apply some body butter.

What causes dry hair and skin during fall and winter?

During the winter two things can cause your hair and skin to become dry:

  • Freezing temperatures and low humidity
  • The heater in your house puts out dry air and dry air is what leaves your skin dry, flaky, and itchy.

To help with the dry air you can get a humidifier and help put moisture back in the air or boil a big pot of water.

Sulfates: What are they and why are they bad for your hair?

You’ve probably heard your hair dressers say sulfates are bad for your hair, but do you actually know what sulfates are?  We are here to help you understand what sulfates are and why they can harm your hair.

The main purpose of sulfates is to create suds.  It is an inexpensive lathering agent that also suspends the dirt and oil from your hair, making it easier to rinse with water and therefore clean your hair. There are however, better alternatives that can perform the same function with fewer suds.  I doubt that you want to wash your hair with something that is also used in engine degreasers!
